During the election campaign, an audio clip of CM Fadnavis asking party workers to use saam, dham, dandh, bedh (muscle power and money) to win the elections was released by the Shiv Sena. The audio clip created a political uproar following which, the Congress has filed a complaint.

Earlier, former Chief Minister and Maharashtra Congress president Ashok Chavan tweeted about the audio clip. He said, "EC should take cognisance of this audio tape. If it is true, then EC must take action against this and Fadnavis should tender his resignation with immediate effect, and if this clip is not true, the EC should take action against Uddhav Thackeray."

The Palghar bypoll was necessitated after the demise of sitting MP Chintaman Wanaga. The Sena leader also alleged BJP's victory due to  EVMs rigging and called it a scandal. It also accused BJP of turning its back and fielding Congress deserter Rajendra Gavit for the Lok Sabha seat bypoll.
