New Delhi, July 28: In its first reaction to the Pakistan election results, the government on Saturday said the new government in the neighbouring country would contribute to building terror-free South Asia. The government said it hopes for a prosperous and progressive Pakistan at peace with its neighbours.

"India desires a prosperous & progressive Pakistan at peace with its neighbours. We hope that the new Pakistan Govt will work constructively to build a safe, stable, secure & developed South Asia free of terror and violence," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

Pakistan Prime Minister-in-waiting Imran Khan said his government would seek good relations with India and would like leaders of the two countries to sit across the table and resolve all disputes, including the "core issue" of Kashmir. His party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf emerged as the single largest party.

According to the figures provided by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) won 115 out of the 270 seats on which the elections were held. The party, however, was short of 22 seats for a simple majority. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) won 64 seats.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) remained at the third place with 43 seats. Khan himself continued to hold meetings with prominent leaders on Saturday. Former Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly Mehmoodur Rasheed also met Khan at his Bani Gala residence.
