P Chidambaram Gets Protection From Arrest in INX Media Case Till July 3
The INX Media case dates back to 2006, when Chidambaram, who headed the Ministry of Finance, allegedly flouted the rules while approving the foreign investment in INX Media beyond the capped limits.
New Delhi, May 31: A Delhi court on Thursday accepted former union minister P Chidambaram's anticipatory plea, ordering the Central Bureau of Investigation to not to take any coercive action against him in the INX Media case till July 3.
A day earlier, the court granted Chidambaram relief in Aircel-Maxis Money Laundering case, directing the Enforcement Directorate to not to arrest the Congress leader till June 5.
The court, however, has asked Chidambaram to "fully cooperate" with the central agencies which are probing the two cases involving him.
Chidambaram's counsel, comprising of veteran advocate Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi, argued before the bench that all information related to the case is "documentary in nature" and already in "possession with the incumbent government". The detention of their client is not necessitated, they told the bench.
Singhvi and Sibal further cited Chidambaram's "clean record" and his "deep roots in public life" as reasons to grant him interim protection from arrest.
Special public prosecutor Nitesh Rana, however, opposed the anticipatory bail plea, alleging non-cooperation by Chidambaram in the investigation so far. He has failed to answer the summons already issued by the ED, Rana told the court.
