New Delhi, Aug 1: The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday witnessed multiple adjournments follwoing huge ruckus created by opposition parties on the National Register of Citizens (NRC) of Assam. The opposition didn't allow Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Amit Shah to speak in the House.
The Congress demanded Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu to expunge Shah's comments wherein he said "you did not have the courage, but we have it to implement the NRC". Naidu said that he would look into it and would expunge any remarks that were found uncalled for. He then said that since Shah could not complete his speech on Tuesday, he should be given a chance to resume his speech.
The opposition members objected to it. Amid the noise, Naidu adjourned the House till 12 noon. When the House resumed, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) members asked that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should make statement on the NRC. Rajnath Singh was to make statement on the NRC, but TMC members continued sloganeering in protest in the Well of the House.
Naidu then adjourned the House for the day after repeated requests to the opposition to maintain order. The first complete draft of the NRC, comprising names of 2,89,83,677 people of Assam, was published on Monday and 40,07,707 have been left out as they failed to prove their citizenship.
