NRC Assam: TMC MPs And MLA Detained at Silchar Airport
The TMC delegation, led by West Bengal minister Firhad Hakim, is comprising six MPs and one MLA.
Guwahati, Aug 2: A delegation of Trinamool Congress(TMC) was detained by the Assam Police at Silchar airport on Thursday. The TMC delegation, led by West Bengal minister Firhad Hakim, is comprising six MPs and one MLA. They delegation arrived in Assam to assess the ground situation following the release of National Registar of Citizens (NRC).
TMC MPs Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Ratna De Nag, Nadimul Haque, Arpita Ghosh, Mamata Thakur and MLA Mohua Moitra, led by Firhad Hakim, landed at Silchar airport at around 2:00 pm. They were detained and asked to assure that they won't make any provocative speeches over NRC issue. The delegation is scheduled to interact with people and organisations.
Ahead of their arrival, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday urged people not to harbour any apprehensions regarding the updation process of the NRC and said "outsiders making provocative statements about NRC will not be accepted".
"Outsiders making provocative statements about NRC will not be accepted and the people of Assam have shown tremendous political maturity which has made the publication of complete draft NRC possible," Sonowal said.
The final draft of Assam's NRC was released on Monday. Out of a total of 3.29 crore people, over 2.89 crore people were featured in the list as legal citizen of India. However, names of 40.07 lakh applicants did not find a place in the NRC draft.
