Education Budget 2019: Nirmala Sitharaman Announces National Research Foundation & 'Study in India' Programme in Union Budget
Among some of the sops announced by Nirmala Sitharaman in the union Budget 2019 are- allocation of Rs 400 crore for world-class higher education institutions in FY20.
New Delhi, July 5: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented her maiden Budget for the Narendra Modi government today. Among some of the sops announced in the Union Budget for the Education department are: establishing a National National Research Foundation and improving the quality of higher education. FM has allocated Rs 400 crore for world-class higher education institutions in FY20. The Budget also laid emphasis on 'Study in India' programme, where the focus will be to bring foreign students to our higher educational institutes.
Among some of the other points proposed in the Union Budget, FM assured that it is possible to become a five trillion dollar economy in the next few years. According to her, with a clear-headed leadership of Modi, all the goals can be achieved. FM said India is now the sixth-largest in the world. Whereas, five years ago it was at the 11th position. India reportedly ranks third in terms of the education score among the BRICS nation. According to a Business Insider report, in 2018-19, Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley allocated Rs 850 billion towards the education fund. In the interim Budget this year, a 10 percent increase in the budget of schools and higher education programmes were announced. The think tank, Niti Ayog feels that India needs to increase its Budget to nearly six percent of its GDP, over the next four years.
One of the demands from the players in the industry were digitalisation in the education sector, with a great focus on the increased use of technology in government schools.
