Gurugram, September 7: Food delivery and restaurant discovery platform Zomato is on a laying off spree as it has laid off as many as 540 employees, reports informed. The latest lay off comprises 10% of the company's overall workforce from the customer support team at its head office in Gurugram, a report by Livemint stated. According to reports, Zomato said these jobs will be automated and those laid off will get severance of two to four months. The report stated that the company has extended 2-4 months of severance pay to employees that have been laid off over the weekend. The report by Mint further quoted Zomato spokesperson saying that in 2019, layoffs at Zomato affected 600 people across customer, merchant and delivery partner support teams. The company added saying that in 2019, it hired over 1,200 people in its non-delivery teams and another 400 off-rolls positions.
Zomato together employ over 4 lakh-plus riders. Founded in 2008 as a restaurant discovery, the company has expanded to 24 countries and services 10,000 cities globally. In India, it services 500 cities. In 2015, Zomato had laid-off close to 300 employees, or 10% of its staff, due to cost-cutting.
