Zika Virus Outbreak: 29 Tested Positive in Jaipur, JP Nadda Says Situation Under Control, No Need to Panic

New Delhi, October 9: In the wake of the Zika virus outbreak in Rajasthan, Union Health Minister JP Nadda on Tuesday informed that the situation was under control and there was no need to panic. In Rajasthan, 29 people have been tested positive for Zika virus Jaipur till Tuesday. The Centre has deployed a 7-member special team to monitor the situation to assist State Government in control and containment measures. “Our surveillance is very robust, all such cases get detected. We’ve standard protocols. ICMR, National Centre for Disease Control and DGHS are monitoring this. I assure people that everything is under control. There’s no need to panic,” Nadda said.

On Tuesday, Rajasthan Additional Chief Secretary (Health) Veenu Gupta confirmed a total 29 positive cases of Zika Virus in Jaipur which included three pregnant women. Gupta informed that 150-200 teams are conducting a combing operation and the authorities have surveyed over 6,000 houses in Jaipur to contain the spread of the infection. Zika Virus Disease: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment of The Mosquito-Borne Infection.

The Centre said that the situation is being reviewed at the level of Union Minister of Health and monitored on a daily basis. Meanwhile, a Control Room has been activated at the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to undertake regular monitoring of the situation. Zika virus disease is an emerging disease currently being reported by 86 countries worldwide. The symptoms of the infectious virus are similar to other viral infections such as dengue, and include fever, skin rashes, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise, and headache. 22-year-old from Bihar's Siwan, studying in Jaipur was tested positive for the vector-borne disease.

According to a government release, all pregnant mothers in the area are being monitored through NHM and an extensive surveillance and vector control measures are being taken up in the area as per protocol by the state government. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has also sought a comprehensive report from the Health Ministry on the outbreak of Zika virus.
