Lucknow, December 28: Reacting to criticism on Police crackdown on agitations against the Citizenship Law, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that action taken by the government has shocked every protestor into silence. In a series of tweet, UP Chief Minister's Office (CMO) promised strict action against those who were part of violent protests and damaged public property. "Every rioter is shocked. Every troublemaker is shocked. Everybody has fallen silent after seeing the strictness of the Yogi government. The Chief Minister has announced that anybody who damages public property will have to pay up. Every violent protester will cry now because there is a Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh," read one of the tweets. The Bharatiya Janata Party-led Uttar Pradesh government is making protesters pay up for damaged or destroyed public property in Uttar Pradesh. Over 20 people died in the state during the protest against the controversial act. Many of them died of gunshot wounds, although UP Police has denied any open firing except in Bijnore, where a 20-year-old civil services aspirant died in the police firing.

In another tweet, the CMO said, "After seeing the all-powerful form of Yogi's government, every rioter must be thinking that he has made a big mistake by challenging Yogi's authority."

As many as 1,113 people have been arrested in Uttar Pradesh in connection with anti-Citizenship Act protests. 498 people, including 148 from Meerut, have been asked to pay up for losses during the violent protests.

The Citizenship Amendment Act grants Indian nationalist to six communities, except Muslims, from three Islamic-dominated countries who fled to India before 2015 and faced religious persecution.
