Winter 2019: Dense Fog Engulfs Delhi, Flight Operations Hit, 30 Trains Running Late Due to Low Visibility

Flight operations and train services were affected as dense fog engulfed parts of the national capital. Officials at the Delhi Airport informed that normal operations have been suspended at Delhi airport due to poor visibility and only CAT III B (instrument landing system) compliant pilots can land.

New Delhi, December 30: North India continued to reel under severe cold wave conditions on Monday, with Delhi recording the minimum temperature of 2.2 degree Celsius. According to a tweet by ANI, the minimum temperature of 2.6 degrees was recorded at Safdarjung whereas at Palam, the temperature was 2.9 degrees. Flight operations and train services were affected as dense fog engulfed parts of the national capital leading to low visibility. Officials at the Delhi Airport informed that normal operations have been suspended at Delhi airport due to poor visibility and only CAT III B (instrument landing system) compliant pilots can land.

The airport authorities urged passengers to stay in touch with the airline concerned for updated flight information. "The officials stated that CAT III B compliant aircraft and pilots are currently able to land. Passengers are requested to stay in touch with the respective airlines for updates", the officials said. It must be noted that a CAT IIIB system helps with a precision approach and landing when the runway visibility is at a distance no less than 50 feet (15m) and is at a visual range less than 200 meters. Winter 2019: North India Shivers in Biting Cold, IMD Issues Orange Alert for Several States.

As the mercury continued to dip, several train and flight operations are adversely affected in Delhi. A dense layer of fog enveloped the area in and around New Delhi railway station this morning due to as many as 30 trains are running late due to low visibility in the Northern Railway region.

Dense fog is also being witnessed near Kalindi Kunj, Mayur Vihar Phase-1, RK Puram, Delhi cantonment area and other places of the national capital. On Monday, the temperature in Delhi was at 4.6 degrees which at Palam was recorded as 4.8-degree celsius. In the wake of the current weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a 'red' warning for Delhi on Saturday as cold wave conditions continued unabated in the region. The red colour denotes extreme weather conditions.

According to the weather department, rain is likely in the capital city and its adjoining areas such as Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad. This weather phenomenon is likely to continue till January 3, predicted the weather forecast agency.
