New Delhi, December 17: Mercury dipped in most parts of North India as several states such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir received snowfall. Delhi witnessed extreme cold as the national capital registered temperature 10 notches below the average degree on Monday. Drass in Ladakh emerged as the coldest place in the region at minus 27.2 degrees Celsius, a Meteorological Department spokesperson said. The Badrinath Temple in Uttarakhand was covered in snow after heavy snowfall on Monday. Uttarakhand has been experiencing heavy snowfall from Monday itself. Pictures from the famous shrine was shared by news agency ANI.

Delhiites observed a cold day on Monday as the maximum temperature settled at 12.9 degree Celsius, 10 notches below the season's average, officials said. Two beggers died in Delhi due to the cold waves on Monday night, said reports. Jammu and Kashmir: Mercury Dips in Valley, Ladakh; Drass Turns 'Coldest Place' at Minus 27.2 Degrees Celsius.

Himachal Pradesh's capital Shimla received fresh snowfall overnight while Keylong, Kalpa, Manali and Kufri shivered at sub-zero temperatures, the meteorological department said.

In Himachal, close to 292 roads and four National Highways were blocked due to the snowfall. Normal life has been thrown out of gear, said reports.

The Indian Meteorological Department, IMD, said the temperature will go down slightly and abate from Wednesday in Delhi and some pockets over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, West Uttar Pradesh and north Rajasthan.

Due to favourable meteorological conditions, dense to very dense fog in isolated pockets is likely over Punjab and isolated pockets over Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh during next 24 hours. A fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect Western Himalayan Region from Wednesday night onwards, which is likely to cause scattered rain and snow over the same region. This Western Disturbance is not likely to cause any significant weather over the plains of northwest India, said IMD.
