Ahmedabad, December 26: For the first time, wild ass census which will be conducted in the third week of January will be held in Ahmedabad district and in Morbi. The reason being the habitats have spread to these areas as well. Total wild ass population in Gujarat stood at 4,451, according to the last census in December 2014.
Earlier the wildlife census used to be conducted in the Little Rann of Kutch, Patan, Banaskantha and Surendranagar areas in the state. According to a Times of India report, the Forest officials in Gandhinagar have predicted that the total number of wild ass must have reached 6,000 now. Earlier censuses showed the beast's presence around 13,000 sq km, which they predict must have crossed 15,000 sq km. The report mentions that usually, the process of conducting the census takes place in December, but due to the extended monsoon this year and the swampy conditions in the desserts, the process has been delayed by a month.
For the first time this year, Delhi had monkey census in order to gauge the extent of trouble created by these monkeys. The census was conducted with the help of Wild Life Institute of India, Dehradun.
