Mathura, October 28: In a bizarre incident, a newly married man in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district allegedly committed suicide on Saturday after his wife refused to observe the first ‘Karwa Chauth’ fast. According to reports, the 21-year-old man committed suicide in his house in Mathura's Maghera Village under Jait police outpost limits. The man, identified as Deep Chand, was found hanging from the ceiling of a room in his house.

Karwa Chauth is a Hindu festival for married women in North India. The married women fast from sunrise to moonrise for one day for the safety and longevity of their husbands. This year, Karwa Chauth was celebrated with much zeal and fervour on October 27. Every year, all newly married Indian women look forward to this joyous festival. According to a report by Hindustan Times, police informed that no suicide note was found. As soon as the incident was reported, the Police initiated an investigation into the matter and informed that the deceased was insisting that his wife observe the fast, but the woman refused to do so. His wife raised an alarm but by the time the room could be opened, he had ended his life.

Vrindavan police station in-charge Ram Pal Singh Bhati was quoted in the report saying that the couple, who had married four months ago, had a dispute over ‘Karwa Chauth’ fast before the husband took such an extreme step. As per details by sources, the woman did not observe a fast on account of her ill health and even her mother-in-law supported her. However, the husband was stubborn and locked himself in a room after his wife refused to observe the fast and later hung himself in the morning.
