Mumbai, August 22: Neville Tata, the 32-year-old scion of the Tata family and nephew of Ratan Tata, is all set to head Star Bazaar, the hypermarket division of the Tata retail company Trent Limited. Neville's ascension to the position now pits him and his retail business against Reliance's retail divisions, headed by Isha Ambani, the daughter of Reliance Industries Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani. Neville was already taking care of Trent's fashion retail brand Zudio.

Neville Tata is the youngest of the three children of Noel Tata, who is the half-brother of Ratan Tata, former Chairperson, Tata Group. Like his sisters, Leah and Maya Tata, who actively work within the Tata Group, Neville, too, is involved in the family's many businesses. He is married to Manasi Kirloskar, Executive Director and CEO of Kirloskar Systems Limited. Manasi is the daughter of the late industrialist Vikram Kirloskar. After completing his studies at the Bayes Business School in London, United Kingdom, Neville joined the Tata Group in 2016 as a lead in their food and beverages department. Later, he managed Trent's apparel brand Zudio, which has become one of India's largest retail clothing stores. Neville served as Non-Executive Director on the board of Trent Hypermarket. The company is a joint venture between the Tata Group and British retailer Tesco, operating 66 Star Bazaars stores pan-India. How Will Neville Tata Challenge Reliance's Isha Ambani?

Neville Tata's appointment at Trent as head could pose a severe challenge to the Ambani retail businesses. Tata's Zudio opened 80 stores after its establishment four years ago and as of 2024, has reached around 560 stores in 164 cities across India, as per a Bloomberg report. Sales at Trent Limited have tripled, with their net profits surging 12 times over, the report said. On the other hand, Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance's retail sector was handed over to his 32-year-old daughter, Isha Ambani, who leads Reliance Retail. According to The Ken, Trent's sales figures are more than Reliance's by at least 15-20 percent.
