'When Your Father Was Bootlicking Britishers...': Jitendra Awhad Hits Out at Modi Government Over CAA and NRC in a Poetic way; Watch Video

Mumbai, January 20: Maharashtra minister of Housing and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Jitendra Awhad on Saturday lashed out at Centre over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC). Awhad, who had so far maintained silence on the controversial law, questioned the Bharatiya Janata Party government over its right to seek proof of citizenship from people. Addressing a rally in Maharashtra's Thane, NCP leader said, in a poetic-way, said "Main Delhi ke takht se poochta hoon, Ab tu maangega mujhse saboot mere deshvasi hone ka? Toh sun, jab tera baap sar jhukakar angrezon ke talwe chaat raha tha, tab mera baap phansi ke takht ko choomke inquilab zindabad ke naare laga raha tha (I ask the power at Delhi, who are you to seek proof of my citizenship. When your father was bootlicking Britishers, my ancestors were embracing the noose shouting slogans of Inquilab Zindabad)."

This remark by Awhad comes amid nationwide protests against the amended Citizenship Act, NRC and National Population Register (NPR). While the protests in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Bihar have died down, the demonstrations in Delhi are still going on -specifically in Shaheen Bagh.

Many opposition-ruled states have claimed that they will not implement CAA and NRC within their jurisdiction. Kerala and Punjab have also passed an assembly resolution seeking repeal of contentious CAA. The Centre, however, has maintained that Citizenship is a union matter and states have no role in deciding citizenships of individuals.
