Bhopal, July 23: Child lifting rumours claimed yet another life, this time in Madhya Pradesh. A 25-year-old mentally challenged woman was allegedly lynched by a mob in Morwa region of Singrauli district late on Saturday on suspicion of being a child lifter. This is another such incident in the list of cases of lynching over child theft rumours. Over 30 people have been killed in different incidents across the country over child lifting rumours over the past two months.
According to reports, the woman was being seen in the area for the past six months and her images were circulated on WhatsApp saying she was a child lifter. The police have arrested nine people over the lynching while dozens have been booked for murder.
The killing of the woman took place in the same area where two forest officials were beaten up by a mob after a similar WhatsApp rumour on June 29. The two could be saved due to the timely intervention of the police.
Such incidents of mob lynching continue even as the Supreme Court earlier this month asked the Centre to frame a separate law to deal with cases of lynching. The court had in its observation said that mobocracy cannot be tolerated and that such killings must stop.
