The State Bank of India (SBI) has issued a nationwide warning to bank customers regarding a rising digital fraud technique known as the "jumped deposit scam", in which fraudsters exploit unexpected bank credits to trick victims into authorising high-value Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions. The warning was shared as part of the National Cyber Security Month Special Campaign 6.0, highlighting how fraudsters use deceptive money transfers to compromise account security.

How the Jumped Deposit Scam Operates

According to details shared by SBI, the fraud typically begins when a scammer deposits a small, harmless-looking sum into an unsuspecting victim's bank account. Fraudsters then contact the account holder, claiming the transfer was made by mistake and urgently requesting a refund. SBI YONO Aadhaar Update Scam: State Bank of India Issues Urgent Warning Over Aadhaar-Based Phishing Scam Targeting YONO Users.

SBI Warns About Jumped Deposit Scam

By manufacturing a false sense of emergency and using emotional pressure, scammers attempt to make the victim act quickly without verifying transaction details or background facts. The core trap involves tricking the account holder into approving a high-value UPI payment request disguised as a return transfer. Once authorised, the funds are swiftly siphoned into the fraudster's account.

Safety Guidelines and Official Advisory

To protect personal finances from such digital payment frauds, SBI has outlined specific precautionary steps for bank customers:

  • Block and Report: Block suspicious phone numbers immediately and report unauthorised or unusual credits to the bank on priority.
  • Avoid Unverified Calls: Do not fall for emotional blackmail, pressure tactics, or emergency UPI requests without independent confirmation.
  • Verify Official Channels: Always verify unexpected credits through official bank channels rather than returning funds directly to callers.
  • Recognise Secure Communications: SBI noted that genuine bank calls will carry the prefix 1600, describing them as secure and verified channels.

In its official advisory posted on social media, SBI warned: "Unexpected credit in your account? It's a Trap! Beware of Jumped Deposit Scam! In a Jumped Deposit Scam, scammers claim to have 'accidentally' credited a small amount to your account to win your trust. When you try to return it, they trick you into approving a high-value payment request. ⚠️ Block the number immediately and report this to the Bank on Priority. ⚠️ Don't fall for emotional blackmail or emergency UPI requests without confirmation. ✅ Always respond to calls prefixed with 1600 — It's genuine, it's secure, it's your Bank." Cyber Fraud in Hyderabad: SBI Branch Manager Prevents Online, Saves Senior Citizen Couple’s INR 30 Lakh Savings.
