Mumbai, October 2: In a massive crackdown against ticketless travel, the Western Railway (WR) conducted an extensive "fortress check" operation at Dadar station, Mumbai, resulting in the apprehension of 1,647 unauthorised passengers within just eight hours on Saturday, September 30. This marked the largest-ever single-day apprehension of ticketless travellers at a single station in a fortress check on the Indian Railways. A fortress check involves deploying ticket-checking staff at all entry and exit points to enhance the identification of passengers travelling without tickets.
According to multiple reports, the Western Railway's "Mera ticket, Mera Imaan" campaign, aimed at eliminating unauthorised passengers, led to this initiative. During this operation, 195 ticket-checking staff members descended upon Dadar station, causing a significant stir among ticketless commuters. The intensified checks continued throughout the day, recovering a total of Rs 4.22 lakh in fines, making it a historic "fortress check." To put the magnitude of this operation into perspective, on average, only 230 ticketless cases are detected per day at Dadar station on Western Railway. Similarly, the daily average of "without ticket" cases on the Western Railway's suburban section, from Churchgate to Dahanu, is 762. This remarkable operation highlighted the railways' commitment to tackling ticketless travel and ensuring that passengers travel with legitimate and authorised tickets. Moreover, Western Railway officials plan to continue similar ticket-checking drives at various other stations, including Borivali, Bandra, and Dadar, along with deploying ticket collectors (TCs) on stations and trains to address the issue of ticketless travellers, especially in AC locals and first-class compartments, based on passenger complaints. The railways are actively enhancing their efforts to promote digital forms of payment for fines and streamline ticketing procedures.
