West Bengal to be Renamed Bangla? State Assembly Passes Resolution
The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee placed a proposal in the state assembly to change the name of West Bengal to "Bangla" in all languages. Earlier, the Union ministry of home affairs had sent back the state's earlier plan to change the name to "Bengal" in English, "Bangla" in Bengali and "Bangal" in Hindi.
Kolkata, July 26: The West Bengal Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution to change the state's name from West Bengal to 'Bangla'. According to a tweet by ANI, the resolution has been passed in West Bengal Assembly and will now go to the Home Ministry for approval. It is only after the approval by the Home Minister that the name of the state can be changed from West Bengal to Bangla. "If the Home Ministry gives a green signal, only then, the name of West Bengal will be changed to 'Bangla", ANI tweeted.

On August 29, 2016, the West Bengal Assembly had passed a resolution changing the name of the state to Bengal in English, Bangla in Bengali and Bangal in Hindi. However, following Centre's reservations with the three names, the state cabinet passed a resolution to change the name of the state to "Bangla" in all languages on September 8, 2017.
