Kolkata, December 21: Students of Jadavpur University, Calcutta University, Presidency University and Aliah University on Saturday protested against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and alleged brutality by cops against students of Jamia Millia Islamia University on Sunday, December 15. The students marched towards the BJP’s state headquarters on Central Avenue. Protests against the controversial act intensified across the country after Delhi police’s alleged action against students of the Jamia Millia Islimia University. In the police action, dozens of students and some cops sustained injuries. Cops reportedly entered the university campus and detained several students as well as roughed them up. Responding to the allegations of using force against the students, the police said that they only acted to control the situation. Widespread protests rocked the nation after the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019 in Rajya Sabha on December 11.
The FIR filed by Police in connection with the Jamia Millia Islamia incident states that a total of 75 tear gas shells were used by the police to disperse the mob at the university. It further states that 7-8 students and miscreants were pelting stones from inside the university gates. Ten people with criminal background have so far been arrested for the violence, that kickstarted a series of protests by students across the country. No Jamia student is on that list.
In the FIR filed by the police, it is also mentioned that the cops had entered into the campus with limited force to identify miscreants and for safety of students. The names of the students include- Kasim Usmani, a member of the CYSS, Chandan Kumar, a member of Left wing student organisation All India Students Association and Asif Tanha, a member of the Students Islamic Organisation of India.
