Kolkata, December 26: West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar was on Thursday "rusticated" as Chancellor by students of the Jadavpur University. The decision to oust him, though symbolic, assumes significance as it comes amid his verbal spat with the state government over the issue of National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). est Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar Shown Black Flags, 'BJP Activist Go Back' Slogans Raised at Jadavpur University.
A letter issued by the Arts Faculty Students Union (AFSU) of the varsity said the students have decided to oust the Chancellor from his charge due to his approach on several issues, including the protests underway against the CAA and NRC.
"As you do not act like an unbiased constitutional head and since your attitude is not at all guardian-like towards the students, you are not welcome in our campus," said an email sent to the Raj Bhavan by the students' union.
AFSU leader Ushashi Paul, while speaking to reporters, confirmed that Governor has been "symbolically rusticated". He, as the Chancellor, was not discharging his duties in accordance with the "liberal and inclusive views" as professed by the varsity.
The union, apart from condemning the Governor's view on CAA-NRC project of the Centre, has also condemned his silence on the violence perpetrated against students in Jamia Millia Islamia University and the death of anti-CAA protesters in Uttar Pradesh due to alleged police firing.
