West Bengal: BJP Protest March Against TMC in Kolkata Turns Violent, Police Resort to Tear Gas, Water Cannons and Baton Charge

Kolkata, June 12: Kolkata police on Wednesday lathi charge (baton charge) at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers at West Bengal's capital Kolkata. The protesters at Bepin Behari Ganguly Street were marching towards Lal Bazar protesting against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress government. This comes after a body of BJP worker was found, two days after he went missing. The deceased identified as 47-year-old Ashish Singh had several injury marks on his body.
As huge crowds gather near the police headquarters, police installed barricades to stop the protests from flaring up. BJP worker, however, managed to bring down some barricades forcing police to use tear gas shelling, baton charge and water cannons to disperse the crowd. Five BJP Mahila Morcha workers have been detained by the police for violating CRPC Section 144. BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya, Locket Chatterjee and others have started a sit-in protest near the Kolkata Police headquarters.
The march began at 12 pm at Kolkata’s Subodh Mullick Square and was moving towards Lalbazar. According to BJP sources, the march was conducted in view of a complete breakdown of law and order in the state.
In 2017, BJP held a similar march to the police headquarters, during which many saffron party workers clashed with police officials leading to uncontrolled commotions on the streets.
