New Delhi, May 7: Several states in India are likely to witness a rise in mercury level in the coming days due to a change in wind pattern, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said. The weather across many parts of northwest, west, central and eastern parts are believed to increase by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius over the next few days. Mercury is on a rise in several parts of the country with maximum temperatures already hovering around 40 to 45 degrees Celsius. Heatwave Due To Global Warming May Cause More Deaths By 2080, Says Study.
According to a weather bulletin by IMD on Monday, heat wave conditions are likely to prevail from May 7 onwards while on May 9 and 10, there may be thunderstorm activity in some parts of northwest India which could bring a brief respite. According to a report by Hindustan Times, there will be a rise in temperature by 2-3 degree rise in the national capital.
The report states that intense heating conditions are likely to be experienced in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana Odisha and Jharkhand. The rise in temperature can be attributed to Cyclone Fani which made a landfall in Odisha on Friday morning. The effect of the severe cyclonic storm was seen in several parts of the country with temperature rising than the average.
Reports inform that on May 6, the maximum temperature in Chandigarh was 38.2 degrees, Lucknow 40.4 degrees, Allahabad 42.2 degrees, Ahmedabad at 40.4 degrees and Delhi 39.8 degrees C. In the last week, the IMD had said that weak El Nino conditions have been observed over the equatorial Pacific Ocean. The El Nino is a weather phenomenon characterised by warm ocean temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, which hints at a weak monsoon and more heat waves in India.
