Navi Mumbai, July 27: Incessant rainfall in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai has brought good news for residents of the two cities. The water stock in 4 of the 7 lakes supplying water to Mumbai has overflowed, whereas the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has reversed its water-cut decision. The NMMC recently announced its decision to restore a normal water supply in the city starting Monday, July 29.
The decision to restore normal water supply comes amid the significant rise in the water levels of Morbe Dam following a heavy downpour for nearly a week, reports Hindustan Times. At present, the water level in Morbe Dam is nearing 74 per cent of its full capacity. "The catchment area of Morbe Dam has received approximately 2,400mm of rainfall, leading to a substantial rise in the dam’s water level," an NMMC official said. The official also said there was no need for water restrictions, as he confirmed that the civic body had lifted all water cuts announced earlier. It must be noted that the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation had implemented water cuts in the city due to insufficient rainfall in June. In the beginning, the NMMC had announced water cuts once a week.
However, the same was increased to twice a week. The NMMC officials also stated the Morbe Dam is expected to overflow if Navi Mumbai continues to receive heavy rainfall in the coming days. He further said that Morbe Dam reaches overflow at 88 metres. Navi Mumbai Schools Collect 1,200 Kg Plastic Waste Under Civic Drive.
