Vivek Tiwari's Killing: Posters Prop up in Lucknow Urging UP Police to 'Spare Innocents'

Lucknow, October 1: As a mark of protest against the killing of Apple executive Vivek Tiwari by an on-duty Uttar Pradesh police personnel, posters have propped up in Lucknow appealing the security officials to "spare innocents".

The posters carry an emotive message which reads as follows: 'Aap gaadi rokenge toh papa ruk jaayenge... Please goli mat maariyega (If you will stop the car, father would halt. 38-year-old Tiwari, against whom no criminal case was registered, was shot dead by constable Prashant Choudhary on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, at 1:30am.

The accused constable has been suspended and taken into custody. In his defence, Choudhary claimed that the deceased attempted to run-over him, which compelled him to fire the fatal shots.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath met the bereaved families and announced a compensation of Rs 25 lakh, apart from a government job to one of the immediate kin.

Opposition has attacked the BJP-led government in the state, accusing it of abetting the police force to violate human rights. "We have been raising our voice against the unprecedented encounter killings in UP. The people of Uttar Pradesh are now fearful of the police's goondaraj," said former CM and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav.
