Mumbai, January 2: A 16-year-old girl is battling for life after she was set on fire allegedly by her father for chatting with her boyfriend on mobile phone. The incident took place at the girl's house around 2 pm on Monday. The accused father, identified as Mohammed Mansoori, was arrested following the incident. The victim, who suffered over 70 per cent burns, is being treated at KEM hospital in Parel.

The girl was talking to someone on her cell phone when her father entered her room. Suspecting that she was having an affair, he asked her to cut the call. However, she continued to speak on the phone. Furious Mansoori snatched the mobile phone and threw it on the floor. He then started beating her and asked how she got a cellphone and whom she was speaking. Mansoori dragged her daughter into the kitchen and poured kerosene from stove on her. He then set her ablaze, reported TOI quoting a police officer. According to eyewitnesses, the girl on fire ran out of the house for help. Neighbours poured water on her in a bid to douse the flames. She was rushed to a hospital from where she was moved to KEM. Mansoori, booked for attempt to murder under IPC Section 307, was sent to police custody by the Vasai court after his arrest. The girl used to spend hours on the cellphone but never revealed who she was chatting with, the police said.
