Mumbai, January 6: A 16-year-old girl from Virar, who was battling for life in a hospital in Mumbai after being set ablaze by her father, breathed her last on Saturday. The victim succumbed to burn injuries at Mumbai's KEM hospital in Parel. On December 31, the girl was set on fire allegedly by her father for chatting with her boyfriend on phone. The young girl, identified as Shaista Mansoori suffered nearly 70 per cent burns and was being treated at the Parel hospital since then.
As soon as the incident was reported, the father, identified as Mohammed Mansoori, was arrested by Police. According to reports, Mohammed scolded Shaista while she spoke to someone on her phone and asked her to keep the phone aside. Thinking that she was chatting with her “boyfriend”, he damaged her phone and began thrashing her.
As the daughter ran for help, he dragged her inside the house and poured kerosene on her, setting her ablaze. According to details by Police, the girl used to spend hours on the cellphone but never revealed who she was chatting with. The father was sent to police custody by the Vasai court after his arrest and has been booked for attempt to murder under IPC Section 307.
