New Delhi/London, January 6: The Supreme Court on Monday directed liquor baron Vijay Mallya from using pending proceedings in the court to stall legal proceedings 'anywhere else in the world'. The apex court made the observations weeks after the Narendra Modi government informed it that Mallya is seeking a stay on UK Court judgment as 'the issue of repayment is pending before the Supreme Court'.

Making the plea at the Supreme Court, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the bench that the liquor baron had requested the UK Court not to pass its judgment on the insolvency proceedings, as issue of repayment is pending before the Supreme Court. Mehta had argued, as quoted by PTI, "They've been saying since 2011 that we will pay everything but not a single rupee has been paid so far." Following the hearing in the Vijay Mallya case, the SC bench -- headed by CJI SA Bobde -- directed Mallya not to proceed with his intentions and try to halt the court proceedings. The bench also postponed the hearing in this case for Friday.

It is to be known that the liquor baron -- accused in bank fraud of over Rs 9,000 crore -- had approached the apex court on June 27, 2019. Through his plea, he had requested a stay on the confiscation of properties owned by him and his relatives by State Bank of India-led consortium of 13 banks.
