London, July 2: The United Kingdom's (UK) Royal Courts of Justice on Tuesday approved Vijay Mallya's request to appeal against the extradition order issued against him. The UK court permitted Vijay Mallya to appeal against his extradition to India. The fugitive liquor baron appealed against an order signed by UK home secretary Sajid Javid in February to extradite him to India. The application against the order was filed in April this year.
A two-judge bench of the Administrative Court division of the Royal Courts of Justice heard Mallya’s plea. Earlier in December last year, Westminster Magistrates' Court judge ordered the extradition of Mallya following which Javid signed the order. The fugitive economic offender in September last year stirred controversy when at the final hearing in the case, he told media that he met the then Finance Minister run Jaitley before he left India in March 2016. Mallya owes an amount of over Rs 9,000 crores to a total of 17 Indian banks including the State Bank of India. Last Year in December, he had also offered to repay 100 percent loan amount.
