Dehradun, August 24: All government and private schools up to 12th class to remain shut tomorrow in Dehradun district following a heavy rain alert. Heavy rainfall alert has been issued for all the districts of the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Uttarakhand.

Dehradun and the districts of Uttarkashi and Udham Singh Nagar have received heavy rains in this week. In Bajpur, water has started accumulating in many places and has become a major cause of concern. Since August 14, heavy rain in Uttarakhand has created a flood-like situation in several areas of the hill state. The water level in the rivers is still rising.

Last week, in Rishikesh, the water level of the Ganga River was just a meter away from the danger mark. The water level had reached 339.5 metres. Following the warning from the weather office, the state government has asked the authorities in all the districts to be alert. The government has also asked people living near embankments to move to higher ground for safety.

Over the last few weeks, heavy rainfall has lashed Kerala. More than 374 lives have been lost, and several are displaced because of floods. All the operations at the Kochi Airport have been shut down till August 29. Rescue and relief operations have been launched to evacuate people from flood-hit areas to relief camps. Heavy rains have also lashed some parts of Karnataka.
