Dehradun, August 5: In the wake of heavy rainfall in hill state Uttarakhand, all schools from class 1 to 12 in Dehradun will be shut on Monday, August 6. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday released a warning saying heavy rainfall is expected to lash several areas of  Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri, Tehri, Chamoli & Nainital in the next 48 hours.

Earlier today, several streets in Dehradun were severely water-logged after heavy rainfall, leading to a massive traffic jam. Due to continuous downpour, the water level of Gori Ganga river, flowing along the Pithoragarh district of the state has also increased, endangering the villages on the bank of the river.

The Met department has forecast heavy rain over the next 72 hours in Dehradun, Pauri, Tehri, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Nainital, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts. The State Emergency Operation Centre said there is no report of any untoward incident due to rain so far, but the level of rivers is rising.  The Centre informed that personnel engaged in disaster management should keep their mobiles on and maintain a vigil especially on settlements along river banks.

On Saturday, the IMD had issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall to occur at isolated places over the next 72 hours. Reports inform that week-long rain spell has affected traffic on 112 roads. According to a report by ANI, Kedarnath Highway in Chandrapuri has also been shut temporarily due to incessant rain on Saturday. The 'Chaar Dhaam Yatra' has also been stopped at some places owing to rains and landslides.
