Dehradun, July 16: Heavy rainfall is expected to lash parts of Uttarakhand on Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said in its weather bulletin. Heavy downpour is likely to occur at isolated places in Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri, Nainital, Pithoragarh and Udham Singh Nagar districts during next 24 hours. The hill state has been affected due to a torrential rains in the last few days, affecting normal life. Due to the heavy rainfall, various incidences of landslides and flooding were reported at various places, including the Gangotri Highway. According to reports, two houses collapsed in Chamoli district, but no injuries were reported as luckily the houses were then empty. The Char Dham Highway has been badly hit by the monsoon, with the roads being blocked by rain and the landslides.
In the wake of the current situation, the IMD has advised people not to travel to higher reaches of the state, the State Disaster Response Force has been put on a 24-hour alert on the 'Char Dham' Highway, and 30 teams set up at 63 points. On Monday, the district administration in Haridwar had ordered all government and private schools and colleges to remain shut following warnings of heavy rains in the area in the 24 hours. Apart from Uttarakhand, heavy rains crippled normal life in several north and northeastern states. In Assam, 15 people have been killed in floods and landslides and over 46 lakh have been affected while 24 deaths have been reported from north Bihar. The IMD predicted heavy rainfall in Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Punjab. Several other states including Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Assam, Meghalaya, Uttar Pradesh may also receive heavy downpour.
