Dehradun, August 12: In a tragic incident, six people including a mother and her baby lost their lives in a cloudburst in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand on Monday. The 35-year-old Rupa Devi and her nine-month-old daughter were killed as their house was washed away by the flood. The incident took place  Vikas Khand Ghat in Lankhi village of Chamoli.

State Disaster Response Force team immediately rushed to the spot to carry out the rescue operation. The lightning began in the night at around 1 am on Monday. In another incident, a 21-year-old woman was killed after her house collapsed in a landslide.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat expressed grief over the incident. Rawat directed the District Administration to expedite rescue and relief operations. The Uttarakhand CM also asked the authorities to provide immediate financial and other required help to those affected. Monsoon 2019: IMD Forecasts 99% Rainfall in August, 100% in September.

Heavy rainfall, flash-floods and landslides in parts of Uttarakhand wreaked havoc and disrupted normal life in the hill state. The heavy downpour caused major damage to the footpaths and streets of several villages across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places specially in Chamoli, Rudrapryag, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Dehradun, Nainital and Pauri districts over the next four days.
