Uttarakhand Follows Three Other States, Decides To Hang Rapists Of Minor Girls
The Uttarakhand Chief Minister made the announcement during the ongoing Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) state working committee meeting in Kashipur.
Dehradun, July 12: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat on Thursday announced that he will make a provision in the state under which rapists of minor girls will be hanged till death. With this, Uttarakhand will soon join the league of three other states- Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan to hang rapists of minor girls.
Rawat made the announcement during the ongoing Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) state working committee meeting in Kashipur.
Also, a proposed law for hanging rapists of minor girls below 12 years is likely to be introduced in the Monsoon Session of Parliament which is scheduled to start from July 18.
It must be noted that the bill, once approved by Parliament, will replace the April 21 ordinance, with a similar provision to execute child rapists, that was promulgated following an outcry over the rape and murder of a minor girl in Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir and the rape of another woman in Unnao in Uttar Pradesh.
Earlier this week, the Supreme Court dismissed pleas filed by three out of the four seeking review of its earlier verdict in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case of 2012. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan rejected the review pleas filed by Mukesh (29), Pawan Gupta (22) and Vinay Sharma (23), saying no grounds have been made out by them for review of the verdict.
