Uttarakhand: Dalit Youth Beaten to Death by Upper Caste Men in Tehri Garhwal for Sitting on Chair and Eating Dinner at Wedding

The victim’s uncle narrated the incident and said on the night when the tragic incident happened, they had all gone to attend the wedding of their distant relatives in Shrikot and Jitendra alone had gone to have his dinner while we were at the other side of the venue.

Dehradun, May 6: In a tragic incident, a dalit youth was allegedly beaten to death by several men belonging to the upper cast at a wedding in Uttarakhand. Reports inform that a 21-year-old Dalit man was allegedly thrashed brutally for having his dinner while sitting on a chair in front of the upper caste men at a marriage function in Shrikot area of Tehri Garhwal district on April 26. According to a report by Hindustan Times, the ailing man was taken for treatment to a Dehradun-based hospital the next day, where he succumbed to his injuries. The report further adds that a case was already registered on April 29 against seven accused after the victim’s sister lodged a complaint against them, but no arrests have been made so far. West Bengal: Youth BJP Worker Found Hanging From Tree in Purulia. 

According to details by police, the deceased was identified as Jitendra Das, a resident of Baasan village in Tehri Garhwal. Relatives of the deceased informed that the victim used to work as a carpenter and was the only earning member of his family. “After having our dinner, we all returned to our homes separately. We got to know about the incident next morning, when he was found unconscious by his mother and rushed to a nearby hospital,” he was quoted in the report. One of Jitendra’s friends, who tried to save him from the accused men, informed that he was thrashed at the wedding venue as well as on his way home. He further added saying that Das was having dinner while sitting on a chair before the accused upper-caste men. After seeing him sitting on a chair, the men got angry and kicked both-his plate and Das off the chair using caste-based expletives for daring to sit in front of them.

Jitendra’s cousin brother, Pritam Das confirmed the incident and said that his brother was hit on his head and private body parts and was so badly beaten that he barely managed to reach his house but couldn’t enter it. A day after the incident, his mother went to wake him and found him unconscious, they got to know about it. Jitendra was rushed to a nearby hospital which referred them to Dehradun. Terming the incident as a serious one, Police said further action will be taken after his post-mortem examination report is received.
