In an attempt to spread awareness against the use of polythene, a 50-km-long human chain was formed by school and college students in Dehradun on Tuesday. Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat also took part in the campaign. The human chain was divided into nine zones.

A day before the event, Dehradun police had issued a traffic advisory so that locals should not face any inconvenience. According to the Times of India report, the traffic was diverted from Hanuman Mandir in Premnagar, Doiwala police station, Kothal Gate, Kargi Chowk, and PNB branch near Bhaniyawala from 8 am to 1 pm. Residents of the capital, school and college students, activists, NGOs, scientists and environmentalists also participated in the campaign along with students. As per reports, Uttarakhand generates over 1400 metric tonnes of solid waste per day. In August this year, Union Minister of Science and Technology, Earth Sciences, Health and Family Welfare, Harsh Vardhan along with CM Rawat inaugurated a one-tonne capacity plastic waste to diesel pilot plant at the CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP).
The plant will convert one tonne of plastic into 800 litres of diesel daily. It is a joint initiative by Uttarakhand State Pollution Control Board, United Nations Development Programme and Dehradun-Mussoorie Municipal Corporation.
