Dehradun, September 22: In a tragic incident, at least three people died after the vehicle they were travelling in fell off into a river in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand on Saturday night. According to a tweet by ANI, the vehicle fell off Nijmula-Birahi road into a river. Reports inform that one person is still missing. As soon as the incident was reported, police rushed to the spot to take a stock of the situation. The search and rescue operation by the local administration and NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) is currently underway.

In August, nine children were killed after a bus carrying 18 school children rolled down a gorge in Kangsali in Tehri Garhwal District of Uttarakhand. In the wake of the accident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the kin of deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured in the accident. Another road accident was reported from the region in August where six people, most of them pilgrims returning from the Badrinath shrine in Garhwal, were killed after boulders from a landslip hit their bus at Lambagad in Chamoli district. Uttarakhand Tragedy: Six Dead, 11 Injured After Van Fall Into Gorge in Champawat.

Several road accidents are reported from Uttarakhand due to the mountainous terrains and narrow roads. In July, two people lost their lives while 16 were injured after a bus fell into a deep gorge near Kabhra village of Pauri district in Uttarakhand on Tuesday, the State Disaster Response Forces said.
