New Delhi, January 1: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a registered political party in Kerala, has written to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) against the alleged crackdown launched by the Uttar Pradesh government against those dissenting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The actions of the UP government, the party pointed out, is violative of the people's fundamental human rights.
The ruling dispensation in India's most populous state is denying people their right to protest, said IUML leader MK Muneer in his letter to NHRC chairperson Justice (retd) H L Dattu. The situation, he alleged, is "dire and terrible" with the Yogi Adityanath government preventing those opposed to the CAA to move out of their residences. Muneer appealed the NHRC chief to immediately intervene into the matter and order an inquiry to ascertain the rights' violations charges in Uttar Pradesh. The former Kerala minister further accused the UP government of preventing news of atrocities to emerge out of the state.
"There's a terrible situation that people can't even get out of their houses. People are being completely subjected to human rights violations. The state government of Uttar Pradesh is trying to conceal this news from citizens across the country," Muneer stated in his letter to Justice (retd) Dattu.

The anti-CAA protests in Uttar Pradesh flared up in the second week of December, after the Parliament passed the law to naturalise non-Muslim refugees. The law has created panic among a section of the nation's Muslim community, who view the CAA in prism of the proposed nationwide NRC as a ploy to strip them of their citizenship.
In the stir against CAA in Uttar Pradesh, a total of 19 people have lost their lives. The police has admitted to firing in "self-defence" in some of the cases. Over 5,500 people have been taken into preventive custody and around 1,100 arrested for their alleged role in the violent protests against the citizenship law. The government has also dispatched notices to several households whose members allegedly vandalised public properties during their demonstration.
