Lucknow, August 13: Several cases of triple talaq have been reported from Uttar Pradesh even after the government recently declared triple talaq a criminal offence. The government had last month passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 that criminalises instant triple talaq. In a latest incident, a woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur district claimed that her husband gave her a triple talaq after she asked him for Rs 30 to buy medicines. Triple Talaq Bill Passed: India Joins Pakistan, Saudi Arabia in Outlawing Practice; Check List of Countries Where Instant Divorce is Banned.

According to a report by ANI, the woman was married three years ago. She claimed that after the divorce, her two children were taken away from her by her husband and in-laws. “I asked Rs 30 for medicine and instead, he (the husband) started shouting at me and gave me triple talaq. Thereafter, his family pushed me out of their house,” she was quoted by ANI.

Another similar incident was reported from Prayagraj on Tuesday where a 29-year-old woman was given triple talaq by her husband over the phone from Saudi Arabia. The woman claimed that she was harassed by her in-laws for dowry. A case into the matter has been registered.

Even after Parliament passed the Bill, several women have filed complaints with the police alleging they were divorced by their husbands using the Islamic law that allows a husband to annul a marriage by uttering the word 'talaq' - Arabic for "divorce" - three times. The ‘triple talaq’ bill which criminalises instant divorce to wives, came into force on August 1 and attracts a jail term of three years for the husband.
