Uttar Pradesh: Two Men Assaulted in Shamli by Gau Rakshaks for 'Transporting Cows for Slaughter'

The two men who were attacked have been identified as Shamshad and Shehzad. Both were arrested by the Shamli police after the gau raksha dal registered a complaint at the Adarsh Mandi police station.

Lucknow, Aug 20: Self-styled cow vigilantes in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli assaulted two men on charge of transporting cows for slaughter. After being brutalised, the duo were handed over to the police.

The cow vigilantism incident was reported in the wee hours of Monday, said the police. The attackers have been identified as members of the Shamli-based 'gau raksha dal'. The leader of the vigilante group is Anuj Bansal, said district SP Dinesh Singh.

The two men who were attacked have been identified as Shamshad and Shehzad. Both were arrested by the Shamli police after the gau raksha dal registered a complaint at the Adarsh Mandi police station. They have been booked under cow smuggling charge.

Singh said an investigation is underway to ascertain whether they were transporting the cows for slaughter. A search operation has also been launched to nab two accomplices of Shamshad and Shehzad, who had fled from the spot in Adarsh Mandi where their van loaded with cows was intercepted by the gau rakshaks.

The Superintendent of Police claimed that action would also be taken against he cow vigilantes who took law into their own hands attacked the duo.

According to eyewitnesses, Shamshad and Shehzad were slapped, kicked and beaten with belts in full public view, before being handed over to the police.

The incident comes days after a cattle trader, Samiuddin, was lynched in UP's Hapur on allegations of transporting cow for slaughter. The accused are out on bail.
