Uttar Pradesh Teen Sets Herself on Fire After Being Denied From Attending Cousin’s Wedding

According to details by Police, the parents of the minor did not allow her to go to the marriage as only the male members were allowed to go in the baraat (marriage procession).

Lucknow, February 6: In a shocking incident, a minor girl in Uttar Pradesh set herself on fire after her parents did not allow her to attend the ‘Baraat’ (marriage procession) of her cousin. Reports inform that the 15-year-old girl allegedly ended her life at her house in UP’s Modi Nagar on Monday. According to details by Police, the parents of the minor did not allow her to go to the marriage as only the male members were allowed to go in the baraat (marriage procession). According to a report by Hindustan Times, her father did not allow the girl as there were no women members joining the wedding procession. Upset by this, the girl skipped her dinner on Sunday and the next morning, in a fit of rage, poured kerosene on herself and set herself on fire.  Virar Girl Set on Fire by Father For Chatting With Boyfriend on Mobile, Dies. 

Soon after the incident, a probe was initiated by the Police. Reports inform that when the family was questioned, they said two months ago, the girl was allegedly harassed by a man and a case was filed in this connection, but her suicide had nothing to do with this incident. Upendra Kumar Agrawal, senior superintendent of police informed that the family doesn’t want to register a case into the matter as the victim’s father confirmed that the girl killed herself in anger. In December 2018, a woman in Odisha died after she was set ablaze allegedly by her in-laws over dowry demands. The woman in her early 30s died at a hospital in Cuttack while undergoing treatment. In her statement, the woman in her statement had said that "she was set ablaze by her mother-in-law and three sisters-in-law. They allegedly poured kerosene and tied her hands and legs before setting her on fire."
