Lucknow, October 8: In an unfortunate incident in Uttar Pradesh, a Dalit man allegedly died by suicide after he was allegedly thrashed and humiliated by a few policemen for sitting on a chair at Ramlila. The deceased man has been identified as Ramesh Chand (48). Police officials said that Chand was allegedly found hanging at his home in Salempur Vivi village under Soron police station of Kasganj district on Sunday, October 6.

Soon after the news of his death spread, Chand's family members and the Dalit community staged a protest and demanded action against the accused, reports TOI. The alleged incident came to light after Chand's wife, Ram Rati, lodged a police complaint. Rati further said that cops brutally thrashed her husband on the instructions of the organisers. She also alleged that the policemen used casteist slurs against Chand. "They then pulled the gamcha around his neck, threw him on the ground and kicked and punched him," she added. Amid all of this, Chand cried and questioned as to what his mistake was. However, no one answered him.

After the incident, Chand reached home and narrated his ordeal to his wife before going to his room. The next moring, Chand was allegedly found hanging from the ceiling. Meanwhile, Rajesh Bharti, Additional SP said that Chand climbed the stage of the Ramlila in an inebriated condition and sat there. Following this, Chand was taken off the stage with the help of policemen on duty. Bharti said an investigation had been launched into the incident. A large police force was deployed in the area after the incident.
