Ghaziabad, August 28: Struggling with mounting debts from failed cryptocurrency investments, 20-year-old Rohit Kumar, son of a UP police constable, devised a desperate scheme to repay his loans. On August 25, while en route to Bijnor for a UP Police constable exam, Kumar staged his own kidnapping to extort money from his family. Having accumulated significant debt from cryptocurrency investments, Kumar hoped to obtain INR 1 lakh to ease his financial burden. The elaborate ruse involved sending distressing photos and messages to his sister, pretending to be a victim of kidnapping.
Kumar was arrested on August 26 in Lucknow after an elaborate scheme to fake his own kidnapping unravelled. According to a report by the Times of India, Kumar was taken into custody after being tracked down by multiple police teams from Kaushambi, the trans-Hindon SWAT unit, and the crime branch. Constable’s Son Fakes Kidnapping to Secure INR 1 Lakh for Loans
Kumar’s elaborate scheme began on August 25, when he was supposed to attend a UP Police constable exam in Bijnor. Instead, he faked his kidnapping by tying his hands and feet and sending distressing photos to his sister on WhatsApp. He fabricated a kidnapping scenario and demanded money, initially asking for INR 1 lakh, later supplemented by a plea for immediate cash for food. After receiving the news of his son's kidnapping, Kumar's father, a constable with the 41 PAC Battalion, filed a complaint, promptly launching a frantic search for Kumar. His scheme involved sending a photograph of himself with a freight train in the background to create the illusion of being held captive on a train. Kumar’s knowledge of police procedures and technology allowed him to continuously shift locations, further complicating the investigation. The ruse fell apart when police traced his phone’s location, which had shifted from Modinagar to Ghaziabad, then to Badaun, Shahjahanpur, and finally to Lucknow. Authorities eventually located Kumar in the Naka Hindola area of Lucknow, walking outside a restaurant. His arrest concluded a challenging search, revealing his elaborate deception aimed at resolving his financial woes.
