Lucknow, July 21: A man who was accused of raping a Dalit woman in 2012 recently surrendered before a court in Uttar Pradesh The accused has been identified as Jagdish Giri alias Jyoti Bala Baba (58). A "fugitive" baba, Jagdish Giri, reportedly raped a woman 12 years ago in Uttar Pradesh's Kasganj area. He recently surrendered before the Kasganj district court.

According to a report in the Times of India, the alleged incident occurred in 2012, when a Dalt woman approached the police and lodged a rape case against Jagdish Giri. After his surrender, the Kasganj district court sent Giri to jail. Speaking about the case, DSP Ajit Chauhan said that the accused was popular in Kasganj district back then. Acting on the woman's complaint, an FIR was registered against Jyoti Bala Baba under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Chauhan also said that they would interrogate Giri and pursue rape charges against him. The next hearing in the case is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, July 24. The incident came to light when the deceased man's body, with his head partly smashed, was found on a farm near Leather Park under the district’s Kirawali police limits on July 11.
