Gorakhpur, June 18: In a tragic incident, a 23-year-old man from Gorakhpur died by suicide following extortion demands linked to an alleged sexual assault by four men. The victim, unable to cope with the traumatic experience and the subsequent blackmail, took his own life by hanging himself from the ceiling of his room. The police registered an FIR on Friday, and the victim took his own life later that night. His body was discovered by his family on Saturday morning, June 15.
Three of the four accused have been arrested, with police actively searching for the fourth suspect. The victim, who was preparing for competitive exams and living with his brother, had been lured to a hotel in the Chiluatal area under false pretences. The assault involved severe physical abuse, including being beaten with a belt, and the extortion involved threats to release the video online unless the victim paid money. As per a report by the Times of India, the victim, identified as Jitendra Kumar Srivastava, who was preparing for competitive exams and residing with his brother, met one of the accused, Karan, online about a month ago. The situation escalated when Karan invited him to his residence in Chiluatal. Later that day, Karan lured Jitendra to the hotel room under false pretences, where three of Karan's associates joined them. Subsequently, the four sexually assaulted Jitendra and further assaulted him with a belt. The assailants allegedly recorded the assault and used the video to extort money from the victim, threatening to release the video on social media if their demands were not met. This further traumatised him. Despite attempts by Jitendra to file a complaint initially, the jurisdictional complexities delayed the FIR until Friday, June 14, when the victim tragically ended his life later that night. His family discovered his body hanging from the ceiling in his room the following morning, prompting swift police intervention.
A case has been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 377 (unnatural offences), 384 (extortion), and 506 (criminal intimidation) against the four accused, with three arrested and a hunt for the fourth suspect underway. The accused are identified as Karan, aka Ashutosh Mishra, Devesh Rajnand, and Angad Kumar, and the absconding accused, Mohan Prajapati.
