Lucknow, Sep 17: A group of government doctors in Uttar Pradesh ransacked a pub and assaulted security staff including some policemen after being denied liquor after closing hours. The incident took place in Agra late on Saturday where 25 doctors of the state government-run prestigious SN Medical College allegedly vandalised the Ashoka pub and restaurant.
A group of doctors arrived at the Ashoka pub and restaurant to celebrate the birthday of their colleague. When the pub staff refused to serve liquor after closing hours, according to the complaint, the doctors called nearly 40 other medical staff and vandalised the pub along with them. The accused doctors assaulted staff members of the pub and police officers, tearing off their uniform.
Following an FIR based on the complaint, the Uttar Police arrested 25 doctors and booked 40 others in the case. Irked by the police action, doctors of the S N Medical College went on a strike on Sunday bringing its emergency ward to a halt. The strike was withdrawn after a meeting senior administrative officers, college principal and other authorities, reported Times of India.
Junior doctors, however, continued their protest. “We met the S N Medical College principal and senior staff members and asked them why no internal action was taken against junior doctors who were booked even on earlier occasions in various assault and vandalism cases. Who is protecting them and ignoring such behaviour?" SSP Amit Pathak was quoted as saying.
Among arrested doctors, 15 were still in jail, while ten others had been granted bail. A case of vandalism was also registered against 40 unidentified doctors.
