Azamgarh, June 8: In a major breakthrough in Uttar Pradesh, Azamgarh police apprehended five individuals, including two employees from the Pawai community health centre, and successfully rescued two kidnapped babies—a boy and a girl. The accused used to dupe people promising to turn girl child to boy.
According to Azamgarh ASP City, Shailendra Lal, the operation led to the arrest of Manoj, a technician in the ophthalmology department at CHC Pawai, his sister-in-law Sangeeta, an auxiliary nursing midwife, and Suraj, a kabaddi player. Also taken into custody were Manoj’s wife, Renu, and an individual identified as an occult practitioner. TOI reported that the rescue mission began after a four-day-old baby girl was abducted from the government women’s hospital on the night of June 3. The police meticulously examined footage from 200 CCTV cameras, leading to the arrest of Suraj, the kidnapper. The abducted baby girl was subsequently found in the custody of Manoj and his wife Renu and safely reunited with her mother. During police interrogation, it was revealed that Manoj and Renu, already parents to two daughters, desired a son. Despite undergoing several abortions, Renu recently gave birth to another girl. Sangeeta, Manoj's sister-in-law, persuaded him to seek assistance from an occult practitioner, Suraj, who was engaged to her sister Saroj. Sangeeta claimed that Suraj could transform the newborn girl into a boy.
Manoj and Renu agreed to the proposition, promising to compensate Suraj with an amount equivalent to the expenses incurred in marrying a girl, even transferring Rs 50,000 to his bank account. Suraj, a kabaddi player, was gathering funds for a training course. Tragically, during the occult ritual, the newborn daughter of Manoj and Renu died. In exchange, Suraj provided the couple with a six-month-old boy he had abducted from Bilariyaganj. However, Renu refused to accept a boy older than her deceased daughter, leading Suraj to leave the kidnapped boy at his residence.
When Suraj failed to convert the newborn girl into a boy, Renu demanded the return of her baby girl. Suraj then enlisted Sangeeta's help. Sangeeta, a nursing midwife at the community health center, informed Suraj about the birth of a girl at the government women’s hospital. Subsequently, Suraj stole the newborn girl on June 3 and handed her over to Manoj and Renu.
ASP Lal confirmed that the police investigation is ongoing to uncover further details of the case.
