Uttar Pradesh: Agra Woman Shoots Self After Panchayat Tells Her to Settle Rape Bid Case

Agra, January 3: In a shocking incident, a 35-year-old woman in Agra shot herself with her husband's gun on Tuesday after she was allegedly forced for a compromise with the man who tried to rape her. The victim is a mother of seven children, which includes two stepsons.
According to the police, the woman accused her neighbour Munish (36) - also father of five children - of allegedly harassing her. She also left a suicide note, before committing suicide, added police. West Bengal: Wife of Political Party Worker Gangraped by Four Men.
In the suicide note, the victim wrote, as reported by TOI, "I was denied justice and insulted in public. Instead of the accused man being sent to jail I was forced to make a compromise with him. he attempted to sexually abuse me."
Briefing about the incident the husband of the victim stated, "My neighbour, who is a relative of the gram pradhan, attempted to rape my wife on the intervening night of December 29 and 30. He had been stalking my wife on for over two weeks and was continuously making lewd calls to harass and pressure her for marrying her."
Adding more, he stated that instead of taking action against the accused, the panchayat took a signature on paper for mutual compromise, which led my wife to mental trauma.
Achnera Police have registered a complaint against Munish under IPC sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 354 (Assault on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty). Police have arrested the accused, but till now have not taken any action against the panchayat.
