Mumbai, November 18: To deal strictly with the people who violate traffic rules, Maharashtra police on Saturday passed an order to suspend a driving license for three months if anyone jumps red signal or talk on a mobile while riding a two-wheeler. Additional Director General of Police of the state issued a notification regarding this. The state police decide to implement this stringent rule after the Supreme Court expressed concern over the increasing number of road accidents in the country. Traffic Police will now take strict action against drivers who violate the traffic rules. According to this new rule, a driver's license may be cancelled for a maximum of three months. Also, state governments are directed to strictly enforce the traffic rules. Following this direction, the State Transport Department of Maharashtra has adopted a stringent policy and has given instructions to the police.
The licence may be suspended for three months if :
- Jumping the red signal
- Transporting more goods than a cargo vehicle.
- Carrying passengers on freight vehicles
- Driving vehicle after drinking alcohol or taking drugs.
- Using mobile phones while driving a vehicle
If anybody caught violating traffic rules, the action will be taken as per the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 and the Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989 Rule 19. According to reports, the number of deaths due to road accident has increased in the last in the country. The Supreme Court has constituted a high-level road safety committee to review the measures to be taken to prevent incidents of increasing accidents. The retired judge of the Supreme Court M. Radhakrishnan is the chairman of this committee. This committee has recently held a meeting in Delhi and ordered the government to take strict actions including suspending a driving licence.
