New Delhi, June 26: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. Pompeo is on a three-day visit to India, the first by any US top official after BJP-led National Democratic Alliance's re-election. His visit is aimed at deepening the strategic relationship between the two countries. Later, the top Trump administration also met External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar at Jawaharlal Nehru Bhawan, Ministry Of External Affairs.

According to reports, Terrorism, trade, India's arms deal with Russia, H1B visas and Iran situation will be among the key issues discussed in today's meeting. This meeting comes two days before the G-20 Summit, where US President Donald Trump and PM Modi will meet. The 2019 G-20 Summit will be held in Japan's Osaka on Friday and Saturday. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, who will host a lunch for Pompeo, said that India will try to find common ground on trade issues during their discussions. "We will be meeting with a positive attitude...The meeting with Mike Pompeo will be an important one. We will definitely discuss issues related to trade between the two countries," Jaishankar told media on Tuesday.

"Both countries are having their own interests. And it is natural to have some conflicts because of that. We will find common ground using diplomacy. We will hold discussions with the US with a positive approach," he added. Pompeo Will Assure India on H1B Visa Cap: Official.

The US and India are moving quickly to achieve their shared vision for a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific region by extending co-operation in areas such as aviation, energy, and space. This visit marks the third visit to India by a Secretary of State during the Trump Administration. After his India visit from June 25-27, Pompeo will travel to Japan to attend the G20 Summit with Trump.
